MEP Vasile Blaga (PNL, EPP) told CaleaEuropeană.ro on Monday that the European Parliament has given its consent by a majority vote to extend the powers of the European medicines regulator.
”This is an extremely important moment, especially from the perspective of more efficient management of shortages of medicines and medical devices considered essential at the level of the European Union states. I don’t want to recall the shortages of medicines that Romania has faced in the past – for example, essential medicines for the treatment of thyroid conditions or diabetes. Important steps have therefore been taken to ensure that such crises do not occur in the future”, said MEP Vasile Blaga.
“This broadening of the EMA’s powers will bring all the actors involved in the medicines supply chain in all EU Member States closer together: distributors, healthcare professionals, patient representatives and marketing authorisation holders”, added the EPP MEP.
The regulation proposing to strengthen the powers of the European Medicines Agency received the final vote in Parliament’s plenary and will apply from 1 March 2022.
