The year 2017 does not to mark only the celebration of 60 years of the Treaties of Roma that established the European Communities, but also a decade since Romania joined the EU, a bountiful project that has brought added value to European citizens, considerable Adina Vălean, Liberal/ EPP MEP and Chairman of the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee.
”2017 marks the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome signing and 10 years since joined the large family of the European Union – a bountiful project that has brought added value to each one of its citizens. For this anniversary momentum, I hope that we will continue to grow together, to strengthen us in the spirit of the values and ideas that led the founding basis and to enjoy our success in an united, prosperous and competitive Europe. Happy Birthday, Europe! Happy Birthday, Romania”, said Vălean in a message on the occasion of the six decades since the signing of the Treaties of Rome – on March 25, 2017.
Sixty years ago in Rome, the foundations were laid for the Europe that we know today, ushering in the longest period of peace in written history in Europe. The Treaties of Rome established a common market where people, goods, services and capital can move freely and created the conditions for prosperity and stability for European citizens.
On this anniversary, Europe looks back with pride and looks forward with hope. For 60 years we have built a Union that promotes peaceful cooperation, respect of human dignity, liberty, democracy, equality and solidarity among European nations and peoples. Now, Europe’s shared and better future is ours to design.
Economic integration, based on the removal of customs duties among member states and the promotion of free movement of goods, services, capital and people, proved such a success that more and more countries in Europe expressed their wish to join in the following years. Areas of cooperation broadened over time and this led to the creation of the European Union. The treaty on establishing the European Economic Community went through several updates and is now known as the Treaty on the functioning of the EU.
