Vlad Nistor, MEP (PNL, PPE), historian and professor at the University of Bucharest, mentioned, in a message on Facebook, about the significance of January 24th as a “first step” towards the achievement of the unitary Romanian national state.
“162 years ago, the Romanians from Wallachia and Moldova had the wisdom to take the first step towards the GREAT UNION, choosing Alexandru Ioan Cuza as their ruler. January 24th, 1859 is an important day for Romania, having several meanings, a day in which unity and solidarity paved the first step towards the achievement of the unitary Romanian national state “, wrote Vlad Nistor.
Every year, on January 24th, the day the Romanian Principalities united, is celebrated throughout the country, marking the union of Moldavia with Wallachia (1859) under the leadership of Prince Alexandru Ioan Cuza (1859 – 1866).
This major event in the history of our country was the first step taken to achieve a Romanian unitary national state.
The Romanian Senate adopted on June 2nd, 2014, the draft law for declaring January 24th – the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, a national holiday.
