Two hundred and fifty years ago, a small group of patriots gathered in Philadelphia to sign a single sheet of parchment. With 56 signatures, they pledged to each other their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor in support of the Declaration of Independence, beginning what President Trump has called “the greatest political journey in human history.”

As we mark this extraordinary milestone and the actions that followed, we reflect on our founding ideals and the enduring role of diplomacy. This anniversary reminds us that the American experiment is a living story, shaped by generations of Americans at home and abroad. To honor this legacy, U.S. Embassy Bucharest is proud to promote the American celebration of Freedom 250 in Romania, part of a global effort commemorating our founding ideals of liberty, democracy, and freedom.

Here in Bucharest, this celebration highlights the deep, enduring bond between the United States and Romania. Our nations are deeply rooted in the core values of Western civilization—faith, family, and hard work—the very principles championed by America’s founders. Our strategic partnership is built on a shared commitment to regional security, economic growth, and democratic resilience.

Romania’s robust contributions to global security and prosperity embody the principle of “Peace through Strength” on NATO’s Eastern Flank. In addition to consistently exceeding defense spending targets, our joint efforts to pioneer next-generation civil nuclear technology and develop Black Sea energy resources ensure that our economic sovereignty is grounded in innovation and independence.

Freedom is not a static monument; it requires attention and work. To the young innovators, entrepreneurs, and tech pioneers of Romania: the next chapter of our alliance belongs to you. Freedom 250 is an invitation to build—to leverage our shared liberty to pioneer new technologies, disrupt industries, and shape new solutions together.

As President Trump noted: “Our founders launched not only a revolution in government, but a revolution in the pursuit of justice, equality, liberty, and prosperity.” The Founders were imperfect, but they showed immense courage, conviction, and deep faith. They asserted what was then a radical idea: that liberty is granted not by kings, but by a higher source. They declared “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.”

Honoring these 250 years means recognizing our shared heritage and a proud destiny of freedom. This July, I hope Romania will join the United States in celebrating our founding fathers, honoring the enduring friendship between the American and Romanian people, and empowering the next generation to carry forward the cause of liberty throughout the world.
