PPC Renewables Romania, the largest private investor in renewable energy in Romania, continues to develop its hybrid capacity portfolio and will build a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 45.72 MW | 91.44 MWh within the Fântânele Vest wind farm (CEE Fântânele-Vest). The project is valued at RON 98 million, of which RON 8 million is European co-financing through the Modernisation Fund.
Located in the South-East region, in the commune of Fântânele, the BESS system will be implemented within the Fântânele-Vest wind farm, which is made up of 105 wind turbines with a total installed capacity of 262.5 MW. Fântânele-Vest is part of the Fântânele-Cogealac wind farm, the largest onshore wind farm in South-East Europe. The 240 GE turbines of 2.5 MW have a total installed capacity of 600 MW and produce approximately 1.25 TWh annually, enough to cover the annual energy needs of approximately 500,000 households.
The Fântânele-Cogealac wind farm joined PPC Renewables Romania’s portfolio at the end of 2024, and the storage project continues PPC Renewables Romania’s strategy of accelerating the expansion of its renewable energy portfolio with storage projects that can actively contribute to system stability, through the predictable production profile provided by battery energy storage.
In addition to developing the storage system, the project involves completing all necessary construction and infrastructure elements, arranging operational roads and access routes, fencing the site, installing safety lighting and monitoring systems, as well as setting up the area designated for operation, maintenance, security and site logistics.
The project benefits from funding through the Modernisation Fund – Supporting investments in the development of electricity storage capacities (batteries) connected to an existing renewable energy generation facility. The investment has a total value of RON 98,357,272.49. The maximum amount secured from the Modernisation Fund is 8.33% of the total project value, namely RON 8,190,756.29, while the amount secured by PPC Renewables Romania is RON 90,166,516.20.
